Discover the History of the Cocktail
The Spritz has deep-rooted origins dating back to the Austrian domination of Lombardy-Venetia in the late 18th to early 19th century. Austrian soldiers, upon encountering Venetian wines, found them too strong for their tastes. To soften the flavor, they started “stretching” the wine with sparkling water. In essence, the practice that might seem sacrilegious to true wine lovers is at the foundation of this cocktail. Its name even comes from the German verb spritzen, meaning “to spray”. The original Spritz, or Austro-Hungarian model, was made with white wine and sparkling water. The cocktail we know today, however, didn’t take shape until the 1920s, when a splash of bitter was added to the mix.
In Italy It is estimated that every day, approximately 3,000,000 Spritzes are consumed.
