The origins of the Americano are somewhat contested.
The most popular story is that the Americano is a variation of the Milano-Torino cocktail. American tourists visiting Milan would order this drink at the famous Bar Gaspare Campari
Since the latter loved soda so much, they asked the local bartender to pour some into the Milan-Turin as well. Thus the Americano was born.
Its origins can be traced back to the period between 1860 and 1930.
The second “legend” has it that the Americano was born as a tribute to the Italian boxer (very famous in the U.S Primo Carnera said, guess what, the Americano – in the flesh.
Later, the Americano would inspire the Negroni, which swaps soda for gin.
